[RLUG] unr & linux

Dennis,

I was able to get wireless in Linux at UNR a few years ago when they were
first deploying it for the campus. It involved changing a few lines in some
kernel modules and recompiling a custom kernel because of a difference in
specifications vs. implementation of the compression algorithm UNR uses with
their VPN. The compression algorithm is actually patented in the US and is
licensed by MS/Mac for inclusion in their operating systems. The Linux
implementation comes from somewhere in Europe and is technically illegal to
use in the US without a license, or at least it was a few years ago.

I think these changes have since been made a permanent part of the modules,
so the process should be some what easier now.

UNR uses a VPN for wireless access, requiring a NetID for authentication.
Any PPTP client should work, but I was successful with
http://pptpclient.sourceforge.net/ and from just looking at their website,
it appears the necessary compression module is now included since linux
kernel 2.6.15. So again, it may be an easier process than what I experienced
back when. It may not be easy, but at least it's not impossible...
