You can tunnel X, VNC, or NX over SSH, but you need to have the
appropriate client/server pieces installed at both ends. Doesn't sound
like you have a local X server on whatever system you're running putty
from. Using VNC or NX is probably your best bet, since you can set it up
to allow either machine to function as a client or a server.
And for all you people who swear that NX is faster...sometimes. :) VNC 4
with ZRLE enccoding over a compressed SSH session, with the
"-AutoSelect=0 -LowColourLevel 1" flags set, is reasonably speedy even
over a typical WAN link, and still usable even over dialup. Plus, it's
free and widely deployed.
NX has some limitations, but can be faster in some circumstances. YMMV.
