It's not terribly scientific, but the results are dramatic.

This is definately one of the applications I was thinking (I may be able 
to get funding for this since it directly correlates with my research).

Another application I was thinking was to use the antenna like radar for 
finding APs -- rotate the antenna, and record the orientation for 
different APs.  If we used this in conjunction with at least one more 
actuated antenna, and GPS or a compass -- if they are of similar height 
relative to each other -- we could try to triangulate the location of APs.
